Yellow Jacket Men's Basketball Team Rallies to Defeat Marietta, 83-73, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) scored 16 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team came from seven down late in the second half to defeat Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 83-73, today (Saturday, January 30, 2010) at Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.


With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the OAC. The Pioneers fall to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the OAC.

In addition to Meeder for BW, freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) scored 12. Marietta was led by Kevin Knab with a game-high 30 points.  

In the first half, BW trailed 8-6 before starting a 7-0 run that ended in a three-pointer from senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) and a layup from Meeder to make the score 13-8 at the 16:06 mark. Marietta then outscored BW 18-13 over the next 8:52 and tied the score at 28-28 when Kevin Knab connected on a jumper at 7:14. The two sides exchanged leads in the final minutes of the period but BW was able to finish on a 7-2 run ending in a jumper from sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) at the buzzer to lead 43-36 at the break.  

In the second half, BW scored the first five and led by a game-high 12 points at 48-36 when Ameen completed a three-point play at 17:43. The Pioneers responded with a 22-10 run and eventually tied the score at 58 apiece on a Duan Lutes layup at 9:10. After several ties, Marietta moved ahead and eventually built its lead to a high of seven at 71-64 when Knab completed a three-point play at 4:11.

BW answered with a 15-0 run led by Ameen, Meeder and freshman forward Ed Householder (North Jackson/ Tallmadge) and led 79-71 with 40 seconds left to play. The Pioneers were unable to respond as the Jackets held on for the 83-73 victory.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 3 when they host OAC rival Heidelberg University at 7:30 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium of the Higgins Center in Berea.

The upcoming Saturday, February 13 game versus Muskingum University is designated as Al Sirat Grotto Day with partial gate proceeds going to the Monarch's Scholarship fund. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
