Baldwin Wallace Men Defeat Muskingum, 60-58, in New Concord for Fifth Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview) scored 15 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 60-58, today (Saturday, January 9, 2010) in the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord. The victory was a season-high fifth straight for the Yellow Jackets (9-5 overall, 4-3 in the OAC).

In addition to Meeder for BW, sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/Senior) had 10 points and six assists and freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/Walsh Jesuit) had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Fighting Muskies (5-9 overall, 0-7 OAC) were led by Cory Bourquin with a game-high 17 points.

Keys to the Yellow Jacket win included outscoring Muskingum 15-7 at the free throw line and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds.

In the first half, the two teams went back and forth in the first five minutes until BW went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead at the 10:53 mark when junior forward Kevin Gall (Brook Park/Midpark) made a layup. Muskingum responded with a 12-4 run of its own, tying the game at 19-19 when Kyle Clinedist hit a jumper with 6:43 left in the first half. BW outscored Muskingum 12-7 the rest of the half to take a 31-26 halftime lead.

In the second half, Muskingum tied the game at 33-33 at the 16:39 mark when Clinedist made a layup. BW then went on a 16-9 run to take a seven point lead at 49-42 with 9:02 remaining as Gall hit a jumper on assist from senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/Senior). Muskingum again fought back and tied the game at 51-51 with 3:33 left when Carson Thomas hit one of three free throws. After three lead changes and one tie, BW took the lead for good on a layup from Meeder at 58-56 with 57 seconds left.

On the next possession, Muskingum failed to score and then fouled Meeder who split a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left, giving BW a three point lead at 59-56. After a Cabbil block on a Colin Bass layup, Muskingum's Bourquin was fouled and made both free throws with two seconds left, making the score 59-58. The Fighting Muskies quickly fouled Cabbil, who made one of two free throws with one second left for the final score of 60-58.
