Yellow Jacket Men's Basketball Team Falls to John Carroll, 80-67, in University Heights

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore guard Corey Shontz scored a game-high 18 points as the John Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace University, 80-67, tonight (Wednesday, January 27, 2010) in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights. An 18-0 second half run propelled the Blue Streaks to the win.


With the win, the Blue Streaks improve to 12-5 overall and 8-3 in the OAC. BW drops to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in the OAC.

In addition to Shontz for JCU, sophomore guard Chris Zajac added 17 points. The Yellow Jackets were led by senior All-OAC forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) with 16 points, freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/Walsh Jesuit) with 10 points and seven rebounds and freshman guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) with a career-high 10 points.

In the first half, BW jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the 16:08 mark when Ameen made a layup. BW extended the lead to double digits at 20-10 with 9:45 remaining in the half when Schmidt made a layup off an assist from sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/Senior). BW's largest lead of 18 points came at the 1:47 mark when Brown converted three of three free throws. However, JCU went on a 9-2 run over the remainder of the half to cut BW's halftime lead to 43-32.

In the second half, BW took a 15-point lead at 47-32 when Ameen scored on a layup with 18:14 left. Then, JCU scored 18 straight points and took the lead at 50-47 with 11:42 remaining as freshman forward Stephon Seton made three of three free throws. John Carroll maintained the lead the rest of the game and led by as many as 15 on two separate occassions with the last coming at the 1:49 mark when senior forward Rudy Kirbus made two shots from the line.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 30 when they host OAC rival Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center in Berea. BW also is home to play Heidelberg University on Wednesday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The upcoming Saturday, February 13 game versus Muskingum University is designated as Al Sirat Grotto Day with partial gate proceeds going to benefit children affilicted with cerebral palsy. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

In addition, the upcoming February 20, 2010 game versus Otterbein College will be taped by S&S Video Productions and telecast on SportsTime Ohio.
