John Carroll Men Beat BW, 96-73, in OAC Opener in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Corey Shontz scored 17 points as the second-ranked (www.d3hoops.com) John Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University, 96-73, tonight (Wednesday, December 2, 2009) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.  This was the OAC opener for each team. The win was the fifth straight for the Blue Streaks and 26th in their last 27 games dating back to last season.

In addition to Shontz for JCU, senior All-OAC forward Rudy Kirbus had 15 points, junior forward Maurice Haynes had 13 and junior forward Tommy Lavelle had 10.  Senior All-OAC forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with a game-high 19 points, sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) had 14 and freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) had 13.

With their win, the Blue Streaks improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and next plays on Saturday, Dec. 5 when they host Muskingum College in University Heights at 2:00 p.m. BW also plays next on Saturday at Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the 19:09 mark when Brown made a three-pointer.  JCU tied the game and finally took the lead at 11-9 with 16:26 when Kirbus canned a three-pointer.  The Blue Streak lead grew to a high of 17 points on two separate occasions with the last at 49-32 with 2:37 left before the intermission when sophomore guard Joey Meyer made a layup. JCU also led at halftime, 52-37.

In the second half, JCU's lead grew to 34 points at 85-51 with 9:17 left when sophomore guard Conor Sweeney made a three-pointer. The closest BW would get after that point was 23 points at 96-73 with seven seconds left when freshman forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/Hayes) made a layup.

Following Saturday's game versus Marietta, the BW men are idle all of next week due to Fall Semester Final Exams and next play on Saturday, Dec. 12 when they host OAC-rival Capital University in Berea at 3:00 p.m.  Media and fans can heard that game live on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via the Internet atwww.wBW.com
