Men's Basketball Team Defeats Heidelberg, 77-75, on Glass' Overtime Buzzer Beater in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) hit a put-back layup with one second remaining in overtime as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 77-75, tonight (Wednesday, February 3, 2010) at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-8 overall and 7-6 in the OAC. With the loss, the Student Princes drop to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the OAC.

In addition to Glass, who scored nine for the game, BW was led by junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) with a game-high 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) also contributed 11 points and five boards. Heidelberg was led by Dan Givner with 13 points.

In the first half, Heidelberg hit its first five shots to open on a 10-0 run ending in a Givner jumper at the 16:57 mark. BW cut its deficit to 10-6 with a layup from sophomore guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) at 14:09, but the Student Princes answered with a 17-9 run and led 27-15 when Zach Golec connected on a jumper at 8:35. The Jackets were able to end the half on a 5-0 run and trimmed their deficit to 10, at 40-30.

In the second half, it was BW that got off to the hot start with a 14-4 run ending in a Meeder layup that tied the score at 44 with 14:15 left in the game. Senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) keyed the opening of the run with six straight points. The Yellow Jackets later took their first lead of 51-49 on a long jumper from freshman forward Ed Housholder (North Jackson/ Tallmadge) at 11:18.

Heidelberg briefly regained the lead at 56-55 but BW responded with an 8-2 run to lead 63-58 when sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) scored on a layup at 5:03. The Student Princes chipped away in the final minutes and moved back ahead 68-66 on a Travis Kinn layup with 18 seconds remaining. Undaunted, BW took its next possession down the floor and tied the score on a layup by Ameen with just 10 seconds left on the clock. Heidelberg held for the final shot of regulation but it was no good and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, the Student Princes scored the first three and led 71-68 when Kinn connected on a jumper with 3:52 left to play. The Yellow Jackets came back to tie the score at 75 apiece on another Ameen layup with 54 seconds remaining. After a defensive stand, BW held for the final shot, which was missed, but rebounded and put in by Glass with just one tick left on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets return to action this Saturday, February 3 at OAC-foe Capital University. Tip-off from the Capital Center in Bexley is set for 3:00 p.m.

The upcoming Saturday, February 13 game versus Muskingum University is designated as Al Sirat Grotto Day with partial gate proceeds going to the Monarch's Scholarship fund. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
