Cabbil Scores Career-High 20 Points as BW Men's Basketball Team Defeats Geneva (Pa.), 88-76

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) scored a career-high 20 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Geneva (Pa.) College, 88-76, tonight (Monday, November 23, 2009) at Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 1-2 overall and next play on Saturday, November 28 at Bethany (W. Va.) College at 3:30 p.m. With its loss, Geneva falls to 1-2 overall.

In the first half, Geneva took an early 3-2 lead before the Yellow Jackets went on a 10-0 run to lead 12-3 at the 16:35 mark when junior forward Kevin Gall (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) made a layup. The Golden Tornadoes then countered with their own 15-2 run to retake the lead at 18-14 when sophomore guard Dave Phillips made a layup at the 12:20 mark.

Undaunted, BW came right back with a 12-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 29-21 at the 6:20 mark when junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) made a three-pointer. BW then extended its lead to 18 points at 50-32 with 31 seconds left before the intermission when junior guard Taylor Roth (Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic) made a layup.

In the first stanza, BW connected on 64.3 percent of its field goals (18-of-28), including 66.7% of its three-point attempts (10-of-15).

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 21 points at 62-41 at the 14:32 mark when senior center Ben Dobberstein (Berea) made one of two foul shots. Geneva then had an 11-0 run to cut BW's lead to 10 points at 62-52 with 12:13 left when senior guard Brandon Harvey canned a three-pointer.

The Golden Tornadoes continued their run and cut BW's lead to three points at 74-71 at the 4:45 mark when junior guard Rick Kolick made a layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play by making his foul shot. BW then went on a 5-0 run to go back up by six points at 79-71 with 3:07 left when Gall made a short jump shot. The lead grew to 10 points at 83-73 when senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) made a steal and a short jumper at the 1:41 mark.

In addition to Cabbil, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) had 19 points and the duo were joined in double figures by Meeder with 12 and Gall with 10 points. Kolick led the Golden Tornadoes with a game-high 22 points, sophomore forward Lambros Svingos had 20, junior guard Bryan Hill 12 on four three-pointers and Phillips had 10.
 
Following next Saturday's game at Bethany, the Yellow Jackets return to action versus Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Berea. The game will be televised via tape delay on SportsTime Ohio.
