Wilmington Men's Basketball Team Defeats Baldwin Wallace, 67-62, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard R.J. Brown scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high tying seven rebounds as the Wilmington College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin Wallace University, 67-62, today (Saturday, January 23, 2010) in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.


The Quakers improve to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the OAC. BW drops to 10-7 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.

In addition to Brown for Wilmington, Tyler Ledford scored 14 points and Tyler White scored 13. The Yellow Jackets were led by senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) with a game and career-high 19 points and seven boards.

In the first half, BW led 7-6 at the 15:42 mark when sophomore guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) scored on a jumper. Wilmington regained the lead two possessions later on a jumper from Brandon Candella at 14:58 and led until 6:26 when BW freshman Ed Householder (North Jackson/ Tallmadge) connected on a three-pointer following a steal and pass from Cabbil to make the score 26-25.

The Quakers eventually tied the score at 30 apiece when Candella nailed a triple at 4:11 and went back ahead on two Candella free throws at 3:10. BW then tied the score at 32 all with a layup by junior forward Kevin Gall (Brook Park/ Midpark) at 1:15 and took the lead when Cabbil scored on a layup at 00:41. Wilmington got a bucket from Antonio Bowman with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 34-34 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Wilmington opened on a 9-1 run and led 43-35 when Brandon Rogers scored on a layup at 16:32. BW cut its deficit to four at 45-41 following two Householder free throws at 13:26, but the Quakers quickly pushed the lead back to eight at 49-41 with 12:22 remaining.

Wilmington eventually pushed its lead to a game-high 10 points at 60-50 when R.J. Brown scored on a layup at 5:35, but BW responded with a 7-0 run that ended in a layup from junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) that made the score 60-57 with 2:12 left to play. After the two sides exchanged free throws, the Quakers got a key layup from Bowman at 00:50 and put the game away with a defensive stand on the next BW possession. The Jackets got back to within three at 65-62 following a three-pointer from senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) with 14 seconds left, but the Quakers hit two free throws to secure a 67-62 win.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 27 when they travel cross-town to play arch-rival John Carroll University at 7:00 p.m. in the DeCarlo
Varsity Center in University Heights.  That game will be taped and telecast on SportsTime Ohio on Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. and on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
