BW Men Fall at Heidelberg, 68-64, in Tiffin in OAC Action

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard scored Jim Smalley scored a game-high 14 points as the Heidelberg University men's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 68-64, tonight (Wednesday, December 16, 2009) in Ohio Athletic Conference action at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin.  

In addition to Smalley for the 'Berg, Adrian Casey scored 11 points and Josh Calver added 10. For BW, sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) and senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) each scored 13 points.

With its win, Heidelberg is now 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC and next hosts Mount Union College in Tiffin on Dec. 19 at 3:00 p.m. BW drops to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the OAC and next plays on Tuesday, Dec. 22 when its travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play the 10th-ranked (www.d3hoops.com) Wilmington College Quakers in the Fred Raizk Arena at 7:30 p.m.

In the first half, BW jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the 16:04 mark when Cabbil made a layup.  The BW advantage grew to eight points, at 25-17, at the 6:50 mark when Glass made a layup, was fouled and converted the ensuing free throw.  Heidelberg then answered with a 9-0 run to take its first lead at 26-25, capped by a Smalley jumper with 2:50 left in the half.  The Student Princes maintained the lead to halftime, leading at the break, 34-31.

In the second half, BW tied the game at 38-38 at 15:59 when freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) converted a layup on a pass by Cabbil. Heidelberg led by five at the 12:50 mark, 47-42, when Kyle Tuley scored on a layup. The Jackets then went on a 9-4 run over the next four minutes and gained the lead at 54-51 with 8:52 left when junior forward Kevin Gall (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) canned a jumper.  

The two teams went back and forth for the next six minutes before Heidelberg took the lead for good with 2:24 left at 63-62 as Kourea Hayes hit a three pointer.  With 21 seconds and BW down by three, 65-62, junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) made a layup and was fouled, cutting the 'Berg lead to one. However, Meeder's free throw attempt was no good and Heidelberg converted three from the charity stripe to seal the victory, 68-64.

Following its game versus Wilmington on Dec. 22, BW travels to Crestview Hills, Kentucky to play in the Thomas More College Coach Connor Classic on Dec. 27-28. On the first day, BW plays Indiana University East at 5:00 p.m. and then plays the host school on the final day at 7:00 p.m.  Media and fans can listen LIVE to all Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM.

In addition, the upcoming February 20, 2010 game versus Otterbein College will be taped by S&S Video Productions and telecast on SportsTime Ohio.  The Feb. 20 game also is the Second Annual "Take a Kid to the Game" Day.
