Brown Ties Career-High as Baldwin Wallace Men Beat Ohio Northern, 79-74, in Ada

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) tied a career-high with 32 points and tied a school-record with eight three-pointers as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated rival Ohio Northern University, 79-74, tonight (Wednesday, February 17, 2010) in the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-10 overall and 9-8 in the OAC, guarantee themselves a winning season and closed the gap in the all-time season series to 55-31. With their loss, the Polar Bears dropped to 12-12 overall and 10-7 in the OAC.

Brown canned 10-of-16 field goals, including eight-of-13 three-pointers to tie a school-record that was set by Doug Dickerson versus Hiram during the 1992-93 season.  In addition to Brown for the Yellow Jackets, freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) scored 14 points and totaled a team-high eight rebounds and sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) had 11 points. ONU was led by All-OAC forward Kyle Meyer's 28 points and game-high nine rebounds. In addition, sophomore guard Matt Phillips had 15 and sohomore center Scott Schnelle had 10.    

In the first half, ONU jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the on two straight jumpers by Kyle Meyer.  BW tied the game at 4-4 and then took a 7-6 lead at the 17:10 mark when Brown made the first of his three first half three-pointers.

ONU then outscored BW 13-5 to build a seven-point lead at 19-12 with 12:03 left when Phillips made a layup. The lead remained seven at 26-19 before the Jackets went on a 7-0 run to tie the score at 26-26 with 6:07 remaining before halftime when Voiers scored on a fast-break layup. Voiers then gave BW the lead at 29-26 with 4:55 left when he canned a trey. The lead grew to nine points at 35-26 and the run ended at 16-0 at the 2:27 mark when Brown made a triple. ONU ended the half by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 4-0 to trail 35-30 at the intermission.

In the second half, BW outscored the Polar Bears 5-2 to take its first double-digit lead at 42-32 with 18:38 left when Brown canned his fourth three-pointer of the night. Brown continued his assault by personally outscoring ONU 10-6 to build the lead to 16 points at 52-36 with 15:23 left when he canned his sixth triple of the game.

ONU then went on an 8-0 run to close to 10 points at 59-49 with 10:22 left when Phillips canned a trey. BW gained a 13-point lead at 62-49 with 10:04 left when Brown made his seventh triple of the game. But ONU then went on a 6-2 run to close to nine points at 64-55 with 8:03 left when Phillips canned his fourth three-pointer of the contest.

After Brown gave BW an 11-point lead at 66-55 with 7:35 left on two foul shots, ONU went on a 4-0 run to get as close as seven points at 66-59 with 6:14 left when freshman guard Taylor Kuhlman made a jumper. A 6-1 Jacket run put the lead back at 12 points at 72-60 with 4:00 left when sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) made one of two foul shots. Undaunted, ONU went on an 11-3 run to close to four points at 75-71 with 1:05 left when Phillips nailed his fourth trey of the contest. He then made a foul shot with 47 seconds left to make the score 75-72, but Brown put the "nail in the coffin" when he canned his eighth triple of the game with 14 seconds left for a 78-72 lead and Ameen added a foul shot with three ticks left on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, February 20 when they host OAC-rival Otterbein College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 3:00 p.m.  That game will be taped by S&S Video Productions and telecast on SportsTime Ohio.
