Ohio Northern Men Defeat Baldwin Wallace, 78-68, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior guard Erza Bradshaw scored a game-high 23 points as the Ohio Northern University men's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 78-68, tonight (Wednesday, January 13, 2010) at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The loss snapped BW's season-high five-game win streak.

With the win, ONU improves to 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. BW falls to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

In addition to Bradshaw for ONU, senior forward Kyle Meyer scored 16 points, sophomore center Scott Schnelle had 12 points and freshman guard Tony Meyer had 10. Junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) had 15 points and was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) with 11 points and sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) and senior forward Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) each had 10 points.

In the first half, the Polar Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 17:47 mark when Kyle Meyer scored on a layup. ONU built its lead to 10 points at 19-9 with 12:30 left when Kyle Meyer canned a jump shot. The Yellow Jackets then outscored ONU 14-6 to close to 25-23 with 7:27 left when Meeder  made a driving layup.  The Polar Bears then went on a 16-6 run of their own to build the largest lead of the first stanza at 41-29 with 31 seconds left when Kyle Meyer made a layup off a fast break. ONU led at halftime, 41-32.

In the second half, ONU rebuilt its 12-point lead at 44-32 and 57-45 with 10:48 left when Bradshaw made a layup but missed a foul shot that would have completed a three-point play.  A Bradshaw trey then pushed the lead to 15 points at 60-45 at the 10:01 mark.  The Yellow Jackets got the lead down to a low of seven points at 65-58 with 5:27 left when sophomore guard Matt Triana (North East, Pa./ North East) made two foul shots and again at 75-68 with 25 seconds left when freshman guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) made one of two foul shots.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 16 at OAC-rival Otterbein College at 7:30 p.m. at the Rike Center in Westerville. The next BW home game is Saturday, Jan. 23 versus Wilmington College at 3:00 p.m. in Berea.  

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when they host Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.
