BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost 82-72 at Hiram College this evening (Friday, November 20, 2009) at Price Gymnasium in Hiram, Ohio.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets drop to 0-2 overall and next play Geneva (Pa.) College on Monday, November 23 at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Hiram improves to 1-1 for the year.
In the first half, BW built a five-point advantage, at 19-14, following a jumper from junior forward Kevin Gall (Brookpark/ Midpark) at the 9:25 mark. After Hiram tied the score at 23 apiece, Yellow Jacket senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored five straight points to put BW ahead 28-23 at the 5:10 mark.
Hiram answered with a 9-0 run capped by a Chris Roberts jumper that put the Terriers on top 32-28 with 2:10 left before intermission. BW pulled to within two, at 36-34, when Brown hit one of two free throws in the final seconds of the half.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets went back on top 49-48 with a three-pointer from freshman guardBrandon Schmidt (Wellington) at the 15:09 mark. Hiram then scored the game's next 10 points and went ahead 58-49 when Jamaal Watkins connected on a free throw with 11:20 left in the game.
BW got as close as six, at 72-66, when junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa. / Fairview) connect on a pair of free throws at 2:41, but Hiram hit 10-of-12 charity shots down the stretch to secure the 82-72 victory.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Gall with a team and career-high 14 points and seven rebounds, Cabbil with 13 points and five assists, and Brown with 12 points.
Hiram's Chris Roberts led all scorers with 23 points and Babajide Eniola totaled 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Terriers shot 52.7 percent from the field (29-of-55) and held a decisive 49-31 advantage on the boards.
Following Monday's game versus Geneva, BW is back in action on Saturday (Nov. 28) at Bethany (W. Va.) University at 3:00 p.m.
