BW Men's Basketball Team Defeats Otterbein, 79-63, in Westerville for Sixth Win in Seven Games

BEREA, OHIO --  Freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Height/ Walsh Jesuit) scored a game-high 22 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College, 79-63, tonight (Saturday, January 16, 2010) at the Rike Center in Westerville. The win gave BW six wins in its last seven games.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 10-6 overall and 5-4 in the OAC and next play on Saturday, January 23 versus Wilmington College at 3:00 p.m. at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Otterbein drops to 4-11 and 2-7 in the OAC.

In addition to Ameen for BW, sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/Senior) had 12 points and five assists and junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) had 12 points and four assists. Otterbein was led by Brad Pollock and Cory Ratai with 12 points apiece.

In the first half, BW led 11-10 following an Otterbein bucket at the 14:24 mark. The Yellow Jackets then went on a 13-4 run to make the score 24-14 when sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) connected on a three-pointer. The Jacket lead held for the remainder of the half but the Cardinals were able to chip it down to four, at 40-36, when Pollock made a three-pointer with 0:54 seconds left before the break.

In the second half, BW opened on a 16-8 run ending in a jumper from junior forward Kevin Gall (Brookpark/ Midpark) that made the score 56-44 with 13:08 remaining. The Cardinals called a timeout and followed with a 9-0 run dropping the Jackets lead to 56-53 when Pollock sunk a pair of free throws. BW answered right back with its own 9-0 run capped off by a three point play from Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) to make the score 65-53 with 4:52 left in the game. The Jacket advantage never fell below 10 the rest of the way and grew to a game-high 17 points at 77-60 when Ameen scored on a layup with 1:06 left in contest.

Following its game versus Wilmington next Saturday, BW travels cross-town to play arch-rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the DeCarlo Center in University Heights.
