BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team, winners of the last two (2007 and 2008), Ohio Athletic Conference Tournaments, lost to Ohio Northern University, 5-1, today (Saturday, May 2, 2009) in the finals of the 2009 OAC Tournament at the Queen City Racquet Club in Cincinnati. It was the third straight season the championship match has pitted the Yellow Jackets against the Polar Bears. ONU also defeated BW, 7-2, earlier this season in Berea.
The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 13-11 overall, while the Polar Bears improve to 20-5 overall and advance via the conference's automatic bid to the National Collegeiate Athletic Association Division III Tournament.
In doubles play, ONU swept BW to take a 3-0 lead. The No. 1 tandem of sophomores Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) lost an 8-5 decision to Liz Bajusz and Jacqueline Sammon. Kaitlyn Macdonald and Bridget Larson defeated freshman Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) and senior Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park), 8-2, in No. 2 doubles, and the No. 3 team of junior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and sophomore Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) dropped an 8-6 match to Katie Gibbs and Jacki Hillis.
In singles play, Pecinovsky put the the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard and cut ONU's lead to 3-1 as she defeated Macdonald in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. Bridget Larson increased the Polar Bear lead to 4-1 with 6-4 and 6-3 wins against Essig in straight sets. Jacki Hillis clinched the championship for ONU with 7-5 and 6-1 wins against Marshall.
