Baldwin Wallace Women's Tennis Team Defeats JCU, 5-4, to Stay Unbeaten in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 5-4, today (Wednesday, April 22, 2009).  The match was moved indoors to Racquet Club East in Bedford.

With its win, the BW women are now 10-9 overall, unbeaten in the OAC at 7-0 and have won 10 of their last 11 matches, including seven straight.  The win sets up an OAC showdown with arch-rival Ohio Northern University on Thursday in Berea.  ONU enters tomorrow's match in Berea with a 14-5 overall and 7-0 OAC slate. BW and ONU also played in last year's OAC Championship match with BW winning 5-1 for its second straight OAC crown.

With its loss today, JCU falls to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the OAC.

In doubles play, BW jumped out to a 2-1 lead as it earned wins from the number two duo of freshman Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) and senior Academic All-OAC player Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) and the No.3 duo of junior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and sophomore Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green).  The win at No.2 ran Greene and Trampert's record to 12-13 overall while Essig and Pelosi are now 10-9 at No.3.

In singles play, the teams each won three matches. For the Yellow Jackets, sophomore No.1 player Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley), this week's Co-OAC Player of the Week, Trampert at No.5 and sophomore Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) at No.6 all won in straight sets. Wins their wins, Pecinovsky is now 10-14, Trampert is 17-7 and Marshall is 13-9.

Following tomorrow's matchup with ONU, BW will end the OAC regular season on Saturday, April 25 at Wilmington College at 12:00 p.m.  The OAC Tournament begins next week with quarterfinal action on campus sites on April 28-29.  The OAC Final Four is set for May 1-2 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio with Ohio Nothern serving as the host school.
