BEREA, OHIO -- The two-time defending Ohio Athletic Conference Champion Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team shut out Heidelberg University, 5-0, today (Wednesday, April 29, 2009) in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 OAC Tournament at the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.
With its win, the BW women are now 12-10 overall and advance to the OAC semifinals on Friday, May 1 at the Lindner Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets will play #3-seeded Otterbein College at 4:30 p.m. The winner of that match moves on to the OAC Championship match with the opportunity to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. With its loss, Heidelberg ends its season at 4-7.
In doubles play, BW jumped out to a 3-0 lead as the number one duo of sophomore Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and sophomore Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior), the No.2 tandem of freshman Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) and senior Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) and the No.3 duo of junior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and sophomore Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Lake) all won. The Yellow Jackets were victorious, 8-4 at No. 1, and 8-5 at both No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, Pecinovsky won 6-0, 6-1 at No.1 and Marshall won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 to give the Yellow Jackets the 5-0 decision.
BW defeated Otterbein, 5-4, in their previous meeting this season on April 4 in Westerville. A win on Friday would vault the Yellow Jackets into their third consecutive OAC Title Match. The Jackets have defeated this year's top-seed Ohio Northern University in each of the last two OAC Championship matches.
