BEREA, OHIO -- The outcome came down to a tie-breaker in the final match at sixth singles and the Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College, 5-4, today (Saturday, April 4, 2009) in Westerville and remains unbeaten in OAC action this spring.
At sixth singles, BW sophomore Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) won the first set, 6-3, and the second, 7-6 with a 7-3 score in the tie-breaker to break a 4-4 tie and give the Yellow Jackets the win.
With its win, the BW women are now 7-9 overall, unbeaten at 4-0 in the OAC and have won seven of their eight matches since returning north from their annual spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In addition, BW had a 3-0 week by beating Cleveland cross-town and non-league rival Case Western Reserve University, 8-1, and OAC-rival Heidelberg College, 9-0.
With its loss, Otterbein falls to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
The Cardinals gained a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but BW won four of six singles matches to claim the win and stay unbeaten in the OAC. In singles play, junior number three player Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood), sophomore No. 4 player Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) and senior Academic All-OAC No.5 player Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) all won to tie the score at 4-4. The match came down to a tie-breaker at sixth singles.
In doubles play, the No. 2 tandem Greene and Trampert earned a win.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, April 7 when they host OAC rival Ohio Northern University in a key OAC match at the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea at 3:30 p.m. It is BW's only match of the week.
