Baldwin Wallace Women's Tennis Team Defeats Marietta, 9-0, to Stay Unbeaten in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 9-0, today (Saturday, April 18, 2009) on Alumni Day on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea. The win sets up an OAC showdown with arch-rival Ohio Northern University on Monday in Berea, depending upon the weather.

With its win, the BW women are now 9-9 overall, remain unbeaten in the OAC at 6-0 and have won nine of their last 10 matches, including six straight.  With its loss, Marietta falls to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the OAC.

In doubles play,  the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick, 3-0 lead, including a 9-8 win with a 7-5 tie-breaker, at number one by the duo of sophomores Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior). In addition, the No.2 tandem of freshman Jenny Greene (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and senior Academic All-OAC selection Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and the No.2 duo of junior Andrea Essig (Conneaut/Ashtabula Edgewood) and sophomore Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) both won in convincing fashion.

In singles play, Pecinovsky had the big win at No.1 as she defeated Marietta's previously unbeaten Amanda Carraher, 6-3, 3-6 and 1-0, including 10-8 in the tie-breaker. It is the first singles loss this season for Carraher, and she has only lost twice in the past two seasons.  In addition, No. 2 Greene, No.3 Essig, No. 4 Pelosi, No. 5 Trampert, and No. 6 player Marshall all won in straight sets.  Overall, BW won 70-of-84 singles games and 25-of-35 doubles games.

If the Monday match with ONU gets washed out due to weather, it will be rescheduled for Thursday, April 23 at the Collins Courts at 3:30 p.m.  In addition next week, BW travels to University Heights on Wednesday, April 22 to play Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 3:30 p.m. and ends the regular season on Saturday, April 25 at Wilmington College at 12:00 p.m.
