BW Sophomore Duo Earn National, OAC Track Honors

BEREA, Ohio --  Baldwin Wallace University sophomore All-Americans Melanie Winters (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) and  Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township/Kenston) have been named as the Division III national and Ohio Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.

Winters was named as the USTFCCCA (United States Track & Field/ Cross Country Coaches Association) National Division III Athlete of the Week and Gallavan earned the OAC Field Athlete of the Week accolade. The duo earned the honor for their efforts at last weekend's University of North Carolina Charlotte 49er Invitational that featured mostly NCAA Division II and II student-athletes.

Winters won the USTFCCCA national awards for her long jump of 18-feet and 10 inches (18'10") which placed her third in the competition and for running the 100-meter hurdles in a career-best 14.53 seconds to place 13th overall.

Two weeks ago, Winters earned NCAA Division III All-American honors  by placing fourth in the long jump at the national championship meet in Nebraska. She also ran in the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles and qualified in the five-event pentathlon.  Click Here to read the release. 

Gallavan had a BW school-record throw of 158'10" in the hammer and career-best throws of 43'5" in the shot put and 137'10" in Charlotte, North Carolina.   She finished first among Division III student-athletes in each event.  Gallavan recently earned Division III All-American honors in the weight throw by placing sixth indoors.  Click Here to read the release. 

"Melanie and Kim had an outstanding meet in Charlotte," said longtime Head Coach Dr. Bill Taraschke.  "Both young women are excellent student-athletes and quality performers in track.  Right now, both are performimg at the highest level of their young careers.  We are extremely proud of them and their efforts and each is quite deserving of the honors."

The Yellow Jackets return to action this Saturday, March 29 when they travel to Mariettato participate in the annual OAC Split Squad Meet at Marietta College.
