BW Women Stand Third After First Day of OAC Meet

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's indoor track and field team stands in third place after the first day of competition at the two-day Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet at the University of Mount Union, inside the Peterson Fieldhouse in the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex. The final day of competition is tomorrow, Saturday, March 1 at 12:00 noon.
 
The Yellow Jacket women have 27 points and rank third of 10 schools.
 
The BW women were led by sophomore pentathle Melanie Winters (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) who won the long jump with an OAC-record  leap of  18' 9.75".   Winters also qualified first for the finals in the 60-meter dash with a BW and OAC-record time of 7.74 seconds. Her mark bested the BW record of 7.87 seconds by Kaylan Lemon in 2012 and bettered the OAC mark of 7.81 seconds by Mt. Union's Mary Mahoney in 2012. Winters was also the top qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.97 seconds. She also owns the BW record in that event with an 8.91-second timing earlier this winter.

In addition and scoring points for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore thrower Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township/ Chagrin Falls Kenston) placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 51'7.75", sophomore multi-event athlete Abby Snow (Massillon/ Jackson) finished sixth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 16'3" and sophomore thrower Maggie Urban (Cleveland/ St. Joseph Academy) placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 48'3.50".  Also, the distance medley relay team of senior Brooke Hradisky (Aurora) and sophomores Ashley Wakut (Seven Hills/ Parma Normandy), Kali Fittro (Tiffin/ Columbian) and Alyssa Nieset (Geneva) placed sixth in 12:59.39.

After the OAC Championships, the Yellow Jacket track and field teams are back in action on the weekend of March 14-15 when indoor qualifiers will compete at the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship Meet at Nebraska Wesleyan University.  The outdoor track and field season begins on March 14-15 at the Coastal Carolina (S.C.) University Invitational Meet.
