BW Women Fall to DePauw (Ind.), 69-42, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Katie Aldrich scored a game-high 17 points as the DePauw (Ind.) University women's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 69-42, tonight (Monday, December 21, 2009) in a non-league matchup in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

In addition to Aldrich for the Tigers, Katie Mathews scored 12 points and Emily Marshall totaled 10 rebounds. BW was led by junior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 10 points and sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) with nine.

With its win, DePauw is now 6-3 overall while BW drops to 5-4 overall and next plays on Tuesday, December 29 when it hosts Manchester (Ind.) College in the first round of the BW Holiday Tournament in Berea at 5:00 p.m.

In the first half, BW tied the score at 7-7 on a Coulter layup at the 12:24 mark. DePauw quickly regained the lead with a 7-2 run ending in an Aldrich layup that made the score 14-9 with 9:14 left in the half.

The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 17-15 when freshman guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) connected on a jumper at 5:17 but DePauw was able to close the half on a 14-5 run to lead 31-20 at the break.  The Tigers out-rebounded BW, 24-9, in the first period.  

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets got to within eight, at 35-27, when senior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) scored on a layup at the 17:59 mark. DePauw answered with 13 straight points and led 48-27 when Brooke Osborne connected on a three-pointer with 14:42 remaining. The Yellow Jackets were unable to get closer than 17 the rest of the way as DePauw closed out the 69-42 victory.

For the game, the Tigers held a 49-22 advantage on the boards.

Following its game versus Manchester, BW will play either Albion (Mich.) College or Loras (Iowa) College on the second day of the Holiday tourney on Wednesday, Dec. 30. The consolation game is at 2:00 p.m. and the championship game is at 4:00 p.m.  Media and fans can listen live to all Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via the Internet at www.wBW.com.
