BW Women Beat Wilmington, 59-58, for Eighth Straight Victory and Remain in First Place

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) scored a team-high 18 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College, 59-58, this afternoon (Saturday, January 23, 2010) in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington for its season-high eighth straight victory to remain in first place in the OAC.  

The Yellow Jackets are now 13-4 overall and 9-1 in the OAC and is tied for first place with Capital University. With its loss, Wilmington falls to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference. BW has won three straight games versus the Quakers and leads the all-time series, 18-11.

In addition to her 18 points, Brough grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Wilmington was led by senior center Kortney Kinn with a game-high 33 points and senior guard Marianne McGoron had 14.

In the first half, Wilmington jumped out to an early 10-6 lead at the 15:39 mark when junior guard Allie Miranda made a jump shot. BW then scored the next six points to take the lead at 12-10 with 12:58 left when junior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made a layup. The Quakers jumped right back on top with the next five points to lead 15-12 with 10:43 left when Kinn made a layup, was fouled and made the free throw for a three-point play.

After BW tied the score at 15-15, Wilmington again built a three-point lead at 19-16 with 6:42 left before the intermission when Kinn made a jumper. The Yellow Jackets then outscored the Quakers 8-2 to retake the lead at 24-21 with 55 seconds left when junior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) made a jumper. BW also led at halftime, 26-25.

In the second half, Wilmington started on a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 30-26 with 18:17 left when Miranda made a three-pointer. Undaunted, BW scored the next six points to retake the lead at 32-30 with 15:43 left when Stack made two foul shots. Wilmington then regained the lead at 34-32 at 12:54 when Kinn made two straight layups. After ties at 34-34 and 36-36, BW built its largest lead of four points at 40-36 with 9:54 left when sophomore forward Katie Heinlen (Bucyrus Wynford) made two straight jumpers.

But Wilmington came right back to outscore BW 8-4 to tie the game at 44-44 with 5:26 left when Kinn made a layup, was fouled and made the free throw to complete the three-point play. Then the Quakers took the lead at 45-44 with 4:51 left in the contest when junior guard Amy Bricker made one of two foul shots.

At that point, BW took over by scoring the next eight points to take its largest lead of the game at 52-45 with 1:57 left when junior All-OAC forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) made a steal and drove the length of the court for a layup. But the Quakers came rigt back to outscore BW 8-4 to cut the lead to three points and one possession when Kinn nailed a three-pointer with 35 seconds left. Brough then grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed foul shot, was fouled and made two free throws for a 58-53 lead with 19 seconds left.

After another Quaker basket made the score 58-55, Stack made one of two foul sots with 9.2 seconds left for a 59-55 advantage. With two seconds left, Wilmington's McGoron made one of two foul shots, and Kinn grabbed the missed second shot and put it back in the hoop to cut the lead to 59-58. BW then successfully inbounded the ball and ran out the clock to claim its win.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 27 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
