BW Women Beat Marietta, 73-46, in Marietta for 10th Straight Victory and Remain in First Place

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 73-46, today (Saturday, January 30, 2010) in the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta for its 10th straight victory and remains in first place in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets are now 15-4 overall, 11-1 in the OAC not lost since December 21 and has now beaten Marietta 31 straight times dating back to 1994. With its loss, Marietta falls to 3-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

In addition to Brough, this week's Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week, sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) scored 10 points. Marietta was led by freshman forward Aleisha Guiler with a game-high 14 points. Keys to the Yellow Jacket victory included holding a 42-26 rebounding advantage, outscoring the Pioneers 24-10 from the foul line and forcing 23 Marietta turnovers.

In the first half, the two teams traded the lead back and forth until BW gained a five-point advantage at 20-15 with 8:02 left when junior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) made a layup. Stack led BW with eight rebounds off the bench. The largest first stanza lead was seven points at 24-17 when freshman guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) made two ful shots. BW also led at halftime, 24-19.

In the second half, Marietta got as close as three points at 24-21 when Guiler made the first basket of the stanza. The Yellow Jackets continually built its lead and outscored the Pioneers 49-25 to build its largest lead at the final score of 73-46 when freshman forward Jen Calhoon (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) made a basket.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, February 3 when it travels to Tiffin to play OAC-rival Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is next Saturday, Feb. 6 when the Yellow Jackets host second place Capital University in the Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Bere at 3:00 p.m.

The upcoming Saturday, February 13 game versus Muskingum University is designated as Al Sirat Grotto Day with partial gate proceeds going to the Monarch's Scholarship fund. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
