Baldwin Wallace Women Beat Ohio Northern, 69-62, on Senior Night in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) scored a career-high 16 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 69-62, tonight (Wednesday, February 17, 2010) at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Prior to tip-off, BW honored senior center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), who played in her final regular season home game as a Yellow Jacket.

With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-6 overall and remain tied for second place in the league at 14-3. With their loss, the Polar Bears fall to 14-10 overall and 8-8 in the OAC.

In addition to Coulter for BW, junior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) totaled 15 points and career-highs of six assists and four blocked shots. ONU was led by Kara Dysert with 16 points and nine rebounds and Jeanne Bockey with 14 points.

In the first half, BW led 11-5 when sophomore forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary Central Catholic) connected on a pair of free throws at the 15:47 mark. The Yellow Jacket lead grew to 11, at 23-12, when Coulter scored on a layup at 7:57. The BW advantage held in double-figures for the remainder of the half and reached 20, at 39-19, when Schroeder capped off a 10-0 run with a three-pointer at 1:24.

In the second half, BW extended its run to 14-0 on a layup by Brough that made the score 43-19 at 18:42. ONU got back in the game late with a 21-6 run that brought the score to 57-50 when Joanna Snyder hit a layup with 5:34 left to play. The Polar Bears continued to chip away and got to within three, at 63-60, when Megan Porter scored on a layup with 1:24 left to play. However, BW got a pair of free throws on its next possession from junior point guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/Firelands) and hit four of four charity shots in the final seconds to secure the 69-62 victory.

BW is back in action on Saturday, February 20 when it ends the regular season with an OAC game in Westerville against Otterbein College at 3:00 p.m. The 2010 OAC Tournament begins next Tuesday, Feb. 23 when BW hosts a home game against a yet to be determined opponent at 7:30 p.m. in the Ursprung Gym in Berea.
