Cheri Harrer Second All-Time in the OAC With 404 Wins as BW Beats Marietta, 94-78, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Baldwin Wallace University 20-year veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer won her 404th career game and moved into second place on the Ohio Athletic Conference win list as her Yellow Jacket women's basketball team defeated rival Marietta College College, 94-78, today (Saturday, January 2, 2010) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

Harrer, now 404-141 in her career which includes five OAC regular season and seven OAC Tournament titles as well as 11 NCAA berths and three NCAA Elite Eight finishes, surpassed Muskingum's Donna Newberry, who had 403 wins.

The Yellow Jackets, now 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC, have won three straight. They were led by sophomore forward Katie Heinlen (Bucyrus/ Wynford), who came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points. Heinlen and Harrer each attended Wynford H.S. In addition, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC Center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) had 12 points and freshman guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) had 11.

The Pioneers, 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the OAC, have lost six straight.  They were led by freshman forward Aleisha Guiler, who came off the bench to score a game-high-tying 22 points, senior guard Whitney Swain had 19 and sophomore forward Lizz Wilson had 15, also off the bench. MC stayed in the contest by canning 23-of-26 free throws for 88.5%, including its first 18 attempts.

For the game, BW connected on 34-of-61 of its field goal attempts for 55.7 percent and 22-of-29 free throws for 75.9%. BW also outrebounded the Pioneers, 40-26.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 19:12 mark when junior All-OAC forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) made a layup, was fouled and then made the subsequent foul shot. After Marietta cut the lead to two points at 9-7 with 17:19 left, BW went on a 27-12 run to build its largest lead of the stanza at 36-19 with 8:19 remaining when Brough made a layup, was fouled and made the free throw.

Marietta, which made all 14 of its first half free throws then went on a 16-9 run of its own to trail by just 10 points at 45-35 with 1:49 left when freshman forward Danielle lang made a pair of free throws. BW led at halftime, 50-37.

In the first half, BW canned 17-of-31 field goal attempts for 54.8% and had 13 assists on its 17 made baskets. The Jackets also made 14-of-17 foul shots (82.4%), including 14 of its first 15 attempts. BW also had a 19-12 rebounding edge.

In the second half, BW regained its 17-point advantage at 54-37 with 19:00 left when sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made a layup. The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 23 points at 72-49 when Schroeder made a layup at 10:24. The largest lead was 27 points on two separate occasions with the last at 90-63 with 3:25 left to play when Heinlen made a layup. The closest Marietta got after that point was the final score.
