BW Women Beats 15th-Ranked and Previously Unbeaten Mt. Union, 65-53, in Alliance

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a game-high 22 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated 15th-ranked and previously unbeaten Mount Union College, 65-53, tonight (Wednesday, January 6, 2010) in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.  The victory was the fourth straight for the Yellow Jackets, now 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the OAC, while the Mt. Union, now 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the OAC, lost for the first time this season after its best start ever.

In addition to Schroeder for BW, sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) scored a career-high 15 points.  Katie Crider came off the bench to lead Mt. Union with 12 points.

In the first half, BW jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead at the 17:54 mark when Schroeder made a three-pointer. Mt. Union then outscored BW 6-0 to close to 7-6 with 16:47 left when freshman guard Rosa LaMattina made a layup. BW then outscored the Purple Raiders 20-11 to lead by 10 points at 27-17 and for the first of three times in the first stanza when Schroeder made two foul shots. The Jackets also led at halftime, 34-27.

In the second half, BW increased its lead to 11 points at 38-27 with 19:05 left when Coulter made a jumper that was assisted by Schroeder. The lead grew to a high of 14 points at 47-33 with 11:35 remaining when Schroeder stole the ball and made a layup. Mt. Union then outscored BW 15-5 to get as close as 52-48 with 5:32 left when sophomore guard Kori Wiedt made a three-pointer. But BW pushed the lead back t 12 points by the final buzzer.  

This Saturday, January 9, the BW women are back in action versus Muskingum University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m. This Saturday's game will be taped by S&S Video Productions and telecast on SportsTime Ohio. Times of the broadcasts on STO are on Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m., on Jan. 10 at 5:00 a.m. and again at 12:00 noon and on Jan. 11 at 7:00 a.m.  In addition, BW's Jan. 16 contest versus Otterbein College will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio.
