BW Women Defeat Manchester (Ind.), 65-42, in Berea to Advance to Championship Game

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a game-high 15 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Manchester (Ind.) College, 65-42, tonight (Tuesday, December 29, 2009) in the first round of the BW Holiday Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win advances the Yellow Jackets into tomorrow's championship game at 4:00 p.m.

In addition to Schroeder for the the Yellow Jackets, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC and ESPN THE MAGAZINE center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) scored 10 points. Manchester was led by junior center Kailey Honn's 11 points.

With its win, BW is now 6-4 overall while Manchester drops to 1-10 overall. BW plays the winner of the Albion College of Michigan versus Loras College of Iowa game for the title. Manchester plays the loser in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m. Media and fans can listen LIVE to all Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via the Internet at www.wBW.com.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the 17:36 mark when Schroeder  stole the ball and scored on a layup. The Spartans then outscored BW 6-4 to close to within 13-6 at the 13:27 mark when Honn scored on a layup.

For all intents and purposes, the Yellow Jackets put the game away with a 17-0 run to lead by 24 points at 30-6 at the 6:19 mark when sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made two foul shots. BW also led at halftime, 37-15. A key to the large advantage at the intermission was holding the Spartans to 22.2 percent shooting on six-of-27 attempts, including one-of-10 from three-point range.

In the second half, after MC cut the lead to 18 points at 43-25 at the 15:07 mark, BW went on an 8-0 run to build its largest lead of the game at that time at 51-25 at the 13:26 mark when junior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) stole the ball, scored on a layup and was fouled, and then made the foul shot. BW's largest lead was 29 points at 59-30 with 9:30 remaining in the contest when freshman guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) made a jump shot.

Following tomorrow's championship game, the Yellow Jackets remain at home and host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 3:00 p.m.
 

In addition, the upcoming January 9, 2010 game between BW versus Muskingum University and its Jan. 16 contest versus Otterbein College will be taped by S&S Video Productions and telecast on SportsTime Ohio.
