Early Second Half Surge Propels BW Women to 70-47 Victory versus Heidelberg in OAC Action in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 15 points and the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team opened the second half on a 15-2 run on its way to a 70-47 victory versus Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University tonight (Wednesday, December 16, 2009) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  The victory was the 15th straight for the Yellow Jackets over the Student Princes.

In addition to Schroeder for BW, sophomore forward Katie Heinlen (Bucyrus/ Wynford) totaled eight points and seven rebounds while senior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) recorded nine rebounds and five blocks. For Heidelberg, Jenny Miller and Lyndsey DaVault each scored in double-figures with 12 points apiece.

With its win, BW is now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC and next plays on Monday, Dec. 21 when it hosts perennial NCAA Division III power DePauw (Ind.) University in Berea at 5:00 p.m.  Heidelberg, now 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the OAC, plays at Mount Union College on Dec. 19 at 3:00 p.m.

Both offenses came out of the gate slow and combined for only six points through the first 7:28 before BW moved ahead 7-2 on a three-pointer from freshman guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) at the 12:32 mark. After a Heidelberg basket on its next possession, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-5 run that ended in a layup from  Heinlen at the 7:27 mark.

Heidelberg answered with a 13-4 run of its own and got to within one, at 23-22, following a four-point play from Stacey Barker with 3:19 left in the half. The two sides then exchanged two-point baskets before the Berg went ahead 27-25 on a DaVault three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining in the period.

In the second half, BW opened on a 15-2 run that culminated in a jumper from sophomore forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary Central Catholic) to put BW ahead 40-29 at the 13:35 mark. Schroeder scored six points during the run. From that point, the Yellow Jacket lead never fell below nine and grew to as many as 27, at 69-42, when freshman guard Paige Whitaker (Medina/ Senior) nailed a three-pointer with 1:17 left to play.

Following its game versus DePauw on Dec. 21, BW hosts its own Holiday Invitational Tournament in Berea on December 29-30. On Dec. 29, the Yellow Jackets play Manchester (Ind.) College in the first round at 5:00 p.m. with Albion (Mich.)
