BW Women Beat Otterbein, 75-53, in Berea for Seventh Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a game-high  18 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College, 75-53, this afternoon (Saturday, January 16, 2010) in the Ursprung Gymnasium for its season-high seventh straight victory and sixth straight versus the Cardinals in the all-time series.  

The Yellow Jackets are now 12-4 overall and 8-1 in the OAC while Otterbein ends a brief two-game win streak and falls to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference.  BW also leads the all-time series, 47-22.

In addition to Schroeder, this week's OAC Player of the Week for BW, sophomore forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) had 10 points and junior point guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/Firelands) totaled career-highs with nine points and four assists. Sophomore guard Shea McCoy led Otterbein with 12 points and sophomore guard Kristi Kotterman added 10.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 18:59 mark when Schroeder made a three-pointer. BW increased its lead to seven points at 9-2 at the 14:06 mark when freshman guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) made two foul shots.  Following five seven-point leads, BW went on a 15-4 run to take its largest lead at 37-19 at the 5.84-second mark when sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made one of two foul shots. BW led at the intermission, 37-21.

In the second half, the Jackets increased their lead to 21 points on four occasions with the last at 50-29 with 13:48 left when Spisak made a steal at one end of the court and then canned a baseline jumper on the other.

The Cardinals then outscored BW 8-0 to close to 13 points at 50-37 at the 12:03 mark when Kristi Kotterman made a layup, was fouled and then made the free throw following a Yellow Jacket timeout. BW then outscored Otterbein 14-6 to regain its 21-point advantage at 64-43 when freshman guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) also stole the ball at one end and made a jumper at the other.
 
Schroeder extended the lead to 23 points at 66-43 with a jumper off the glass at the 6:46 mark and to 25 points at 68-43 when she made two free throws at the 6:09 mark. The largest lead of the game was 29 points at 72-43 with 4:12 left when Spisak made a jumper, was fouled but missed her free throw.

BW is back in action next Saturday, Jan. 27 when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play OAC foe Wilmington College at the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m.  The next home game is on Wednesday, Jan. 27 when BW hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
