BW Women Defeat Loras (Iowa), 64-62, in BW Holiday Tourney Championship Game

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University freshman guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) canned a game-winning three-pointer with 14.85 seconds as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Loras (Iowa) College, 64-62, today (Wednesday, December 30, 2009) in the Championship Game of the BW Holiday Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) and junior All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 14 points each and sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) with 12 points. The Duhawks were led by senior guard Lindsay Bava with a game-high 16 points. Schroeder was named as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and joined on the all-tournament team by Brough, Coulter, Bava, Manchester's (Ind.) Kailey Honn and Albion's (Mich.) Keigan Edwards.

With its win, BW is now 7-4 overall while Loras drops to 6-5 overall. BW next plays on Saturday, January 2, 2010 against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College in Berea at 3:00 p.m. Media and fans can listen LIVE to all Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games on campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, and via the Internet at www.wBW.com.

In the first half, Loras jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 18:04 mark when Bava made a three-pointer. After the Duhawks has four more leads of five points with the last at 17-12 with 10:11 left, BW went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-17 lead with 7:31 left when Schroeder made two foul shots.

After a Bava trey tied it at 20-20 with 6:46 left before the intermission, BW outscored Loras 6-3 to take a 26-23 lead with 57 seconds left when Brough made her second straight layup. The Yellow Jackets also led at halftime, 26-25.

In the second half, Loras regained the lead at 27-26 when freshman center Mellissa Herrmann scored off of an offensive rebound at 19:37. BW then went on an 13-1 run to take a 39-28 lead with 14:26 left when Carpenter made a layup. BW's lead then grew to 17 points at 53-36 with 9:38 remaining when sophomore forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary Central Catholic) made a jumper. Loras then went on a 7-0 run to close to 10 points at 53-43 with 7:16 left when Herrmann made two foul shots. Then a Bava trey closed the gap to eight at 56-48 with 4:55 left, but a Brough three-point play at 4:42 pushed the lead back to a 11 points at 59-48.

The Duhawks went done yet as they outscored BW 5-0 to cut the lead back to six points at 59-53 with 3:24 left when Bava made two foul shots. Schroeder pushed it back to eight at 61-53 with two free throws of her own at 3:06 and Loras frosh forward Brit Kent sent it back to six at 61-55 with a rebound basket at 2:40.

After a missed BW free throw, Kent made a foul shot at 2:13, Hudson scored on a jumper at 1:38, Bava made two foul shots at 1:03 and Hudson grabbed a rebound at 25.40 seconds and scored to complete a 26-8 run and give Loras its first lead at 62-61 since the opening basket of the second stanza.

Not to be outdone, Carpenter canned the game-winner for the final lead. Loras then inbounded the ball and called timeout with 12.67 seconds remaining. After the timeout, the Duhawks had two chances, but Bava could not connect on either shot.

Following Marietta game on Jan. 2, BW then travels to Alliance, Ohio to play OAC arch-rival Mount Union College at 7:30 p.m.
 
In addition, the upcoming January 9, 2010 game between BW versus Muskingum University and its Jan. 16 contest versus Otterbein College will be taped by S&S Video Productions and telecast on SportsTime Ohio.
