BW Men’s Tennis Team Beats Defiance to Improve to 8-0

DEFIANCE, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated Defiance College, 9-0, today (Saturday, March 2, 2013) at Defiance College's George M. Smart Athletic Facility.  The win kept the Yellow Jackets unbeaten this season, and gave BW a sweep at Defiance as earlier today it beat NCAA Division II St. Francis (Ind.), 9-0.

With its victory, BW improves to 8-0 overall and has now won 36 of its last 37 dual matches dating back to last season.  With its loss, Defiance, which was playing its first match of the season, is 0-1 overall.

BW gained a 3-0 lead after doubles play and closed out the match by winning all the singles matches.

In doubles, the No. 1 duo of freshman No.3 singles student-athlete Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and freshman No.5 singles player Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated Defiance's No.1 tandem of Ryan Nelson and Cord Speelman by an 8-5 score.  The No.2 tandem of sophomore No.2 singles standout Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) and junior No.6 singles player Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) beat Craig Bills and Mike Ross of Defiance, 8-1. The No. 3 team of senior No.1 singles player Joe Horvath (North Royalton) and senior No.4 singles player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) defeated Defiance's Justin Walker and Michael Vanderkolk, 8-0.

In singles, Horvath beat Ross, 3-6, 6-3, and 1-0 (10-7) at No.1, Patterson beat Nelson, 6-0 and 6-1, at No.2, Harris beat Speelman, 6-3 and 6-2 at No.3, Kearney beat Bills, 6-0 and 6-0 at No.4, Minrovic beat Walker, 6-2 and 6-1 at No.5, and junior Dan Rowsey (Ashland) beat Tyler Thiel, 6-2 and 6-0, at No.6.

The Yellow Jacket men are back in action on Sunday, March 10 when they travel to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina from March 10-15 on their annual Spring Break Trip. BW plays Nazareth (N.Y.) College in its first match at 8:00 a.m. The first northern match is on March 23 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

A year ago, the BW men posted a set a school-record with 29 victories, posted a 29-1 record, won both the OAC regular season title (9-0 record) and the OAC Tournament title and advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament where they won its first-ever NCAA tourney match.
