NORTH RIDGEVILLE, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated visiting Franciscan University, 9-0, today (Saturday, February 23, 2013) at the North Ridge Racquet Club.  The victory improved the Yellow Jackets to 5-0 overall prior to its match tonight against NCAA Division II Lake Erie College at North Ridge.

With its loss, Franciscan is 0-2 overall.

BW was led by senior No. 1 player Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated Paul Jarzynka, 7-5 and 6-2.  In addition, sophomore No. 2 player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) defeated Leonel Lacayo, 6-0 and 6-0; freshman No. 3 player Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) beat Zachary Quiza, 6-0 and 6-3; senior No. 4 player Alexander Kerney (North Olmsted) beat John Shultis, 6-2 and 6-2; freshman No. 5 player Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) shutout David Freytag, 6-0 and 6-0; and junior No. 6 player Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) shutout Robert Butcher, 6-0 and 6-0.    

In doubles action, the No. 1 duo of Harris and Ganim defeated Jarzynka and Lacayo, 8-6;  The No. 2 tandem of Patterson and Minrovic beat Quiza and Brian Robau, 8-2; and the No. 3 team of seniors Horvath and Kearney blanked Butcher and Shultis, 8-0.

The Yellow Jacket men are back in action on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to Defiance, Ohio to play St. Francis (Ind.) University at Defiance College at 10:00 a.m., and then play host Defiance at 2:00 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets then travel to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina from March 10-15 on its annual Spring Break Trip where they will play six matches.

A year ago, the BW men set a school-record with 29 victories, posted a 29-1 record, won both the OAC regular season title (9-0 record) and the OAC Tournament title and advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament where they won its first-ever NCAA tourney match.
