Men's Tennis Competes at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team competed today and yesterday at the Oberlin College Fall Invitational Tournament at the Don Hunsinger Tennis Courts.

In singles play on day one, round one, senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton) defeated Bas Can Lent of Case Western University, 4-1 retired. Next for the Yellow Jackets was sophomore Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) who defeated Allex Hurtuch of Allegheny College, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Following Patterson, freshman Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) defeated  Amadeus Nunaley-Connor of Allegheny College, 6-0, 6-3. Senior Alex Kearney (North Olmsted)  defeated Thomas Manning of Allegheny College, 6-0, 6-2. After Kearney, freshman Doug Ganim defeated Dorion Kemphf of Heidelberg University, 6-1, 6-1. Following Ganim, junior Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) defeated Branden McKenna of Oberlin College, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-1. Junior Zach Elbin (Findlay) defeated Kevin Petnuch of John Carroll University, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3. Also playing for BW, junior Dan Rowsey (Ashland) was defeated by Hunter Pellegrini of John Carroll University, 6-3, 6-1.

In round two of singles on day one for the Yellow Jackets, Horvath defeated Nick Ertuckuner of CWRU, 6-3, 6-0. Elbin picked up a victory over Connor Burkhart of JCU, 6-1, 6-0. Next, Harris defeated Samarth Gopal of Allegheny, 6-1, 6-1. Ganim posted a 6-0, 6-1, victory over McKenna. Rowsey picked up a victory over Sawyer Dina of John Carroll, 6-4, 6-4. Kearney defeated Parker Oka-Wong of Oberlin College, 6-1, 6-3. Also participating in day one of round two for BW, Minrovic was also defeated by Zack Schwenning of Heidelberg University, 6-4, 6-3 and Patterson was defeated by Viswajit Simhadri, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles action on day one, round one, Horvath and Kearney defeated Petnuch and Burkhart of JCU, 8-0. Also winning for the Yellow Jackets in doubles play were Harris and Ganim as they defeated Dominic Eusanio and Sean Graham, 8-2. Also playing for the BW was Patterson and Minrovic who were defeated by Tyler Triolo and Alex Hurtuk, 9-8 (2). Rowsey and Elbin were defeated by Gopal and Andreas Landgrebe, 8-0.

In doubles action on day one, round two, Patterson and Minrovic defeated Connor and Conroy of Allegheny, 8-6. Also winning in round two for the Yellow Jackets were Ganim and Harris, winning by a score of 8-2, beating Schwenning and Kempf of Heidelberg University and Horvath and Kearney defeated Eric Grimaldi and Pellegrini of John Carroll University, 8-1. Elbin and Rowsey were defeated in round two by Frank Mosconi and Thomas Manning, 8-1.

In singles play on day two, Horvath defeated Cole, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-5. Harris next defeated Trilolo 7-5, 7-5. Next for BW, Kearney defeated Conroy, 6-2, 6-2. Rounding out the victories for the Yellow Jackets, Minrovic defeated Pelligrini, 6-4, 6-2 and Elbin defeated Bloch, 6-2, 6-2.  Also competing on day two were Patterson, who was defeated by Louis, 6-4, 6-1, Ganim lost to Sam Stephenson of Allegheny College, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Rowsey was beaten by Gramalei, 6-0, 6-3. 

In doubles action on day two, Horvath and Kearney defeated Eliot Heaton and McKenna of Oberlin College, 8-1, Elbin and Rowsey defeated Daniel Bloch and Oka-Wong of Oberlin College, 8-2, Harris and Ganim defeated Daniel Conroy and Nunaley-Connor of Allegheny College, 8-5. Also playing for the Yellow Jackets was Patterson and Minrovic were defeated by Callan Louis and Soren Zeliger of Oberlin College, 8-2.

The Yellow Jackets have completed the non-traditional fall portion of their schedule and will resume action on February 9, 2013 when they host Penn State Behrend (Pa.) University in an indoor match at 1:00 p.m. The 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament occurs during the traditional spring schedule.

A year ago, the BW men posted a set a school-record with 29 victories, posted a 29-1 record, won both the OAC regular season title (9-0 record) and the OAC Tournament title and advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament where they won its first-ever NCAA tourney match.
