BW Men Move to 16-0 With Eight Shutout of Season

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team improved its season record to 16-0 today with a PERFECT, 9-0 shutout victory against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University in its home and league opener inside the Lou Higgins Center.  The match was moved indoors due to inclement weather outside and at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Complex.

Highlighting the victory was senior No.1 singles player Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated Muskingum's Dale De Fluiter by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to win his 89th career match and improve to 89-11 for his career with a .900 career winning percentage. He is second all-time at BW in singles wins. The all-time leader is James Daly (2005-2008) with 105 career victories.

In addition to winning its 16th straight match this season, the Yellow Jackets have now won 45 of their last 46 dual matches dating back to last season when they finished 29-1 overall, won both the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  With its loss, the Fighting Muskies are 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.

BW built a 3-0 lead after doubles and swept all six singles matches for its eighth shutout of the season. The Yellow Jackets won all nine matches, all 15 sets and all 96 games to pitch the PERFECT shutout.

In addition to Horvath, sophomore All-OAC No.2 singles player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) won his match against Muskingum's Parker Abraham, 6-0 and 6-0, to improve to 19-3 overall.  At No.3 singles, freshman Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) beat the Fighting Muskies' John Barr, 6-0 and 6-0, to improve to 18-3.  At No.4 singles, senior All-OAC standout Alex Kearney (North Olmsted), last week's OAC Player of the Week, won against Muskingum's Ben Windland, 6-0 and 6-0, to improve to 15-1. At No.5 singles, freshman Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) beat Muskingum's Gen Montgomery, 6-0 and 6-0, to move to 17-3. At No.6 singles, junior Academic All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 student-athlete Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) beat Muskingum's Matt Allen, 6-0 and 6-0, to improve to 17-4 overall.  

In doubles action, the No.1 duo of Ganim and Harris beat Muskingum's De Fluiter and Abraham, 8-0, to improve to 10-4 overall. The No. 2 tandem of Patterson and Minrovic won 8-0 to improve to 13-3 overall.  The No. 3 duo of seniors Horvath and Kearney won 8-0 to improve to a perfect 12-0.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, April 6 when they travel to Alliance to play the 9-1 overall University of Mount Union Purple Raiders at 1:00 p.m. The next home match is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 against Wilmington College at 12:00 noon.
