BW Men’s Tennis Team Beats Capital, 8-1

BEREA, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 8-1, today (Friday, April 26, 2013) in an OAC match at the Capital Tennis Courts.   The Yellow Jackets end the 2013 season tomorrow with an OAC match at Marietta College at 1:00 p.m.

The victory improves BW's record to 22-1 overall and 7-1 in the OAC.  The Yellow Jackets have won 51 of their last 52 regular season dual matches, including a 29-match streak a year ago and a 20-match streak this season.  Capital drops to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets led, 3-0, after doubles play and won five of six singles matches.

Highlighting the singles action for BW was All-OAC No. 1 senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated Capital's Luke Buchanan by the scores of 6-3 and 6-4 to improve to 23-3 this season and 96-11 for his career.  Horvath is nine wins shy of all-time leader James Daly (2005-08), who won a school-record 105 matches during his career.

In addition in singles, All-OAC No. 2 sophomore Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) beat Capital's John Murray, 6-0 and 6-3, to improve his season record to 23-5.  No. 3 freshman Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) shut out CU's Kenny Duncan, 6-0 and 6-0, to improve his season record to 25-3.  Academic All-OAC No. 4 senior standout Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) beat the Crusaders' G.C. DiMichelangelo, 7-5 and 6-0, to improve his season record to 20-3.  Junior No. 6 Dan Rowsey (Ashland/ Senior) beat Capital's Josh Dotson, 6-2 and 6-1, to improve to 9-5 overall.

In doubles action, the No.1 tandem of Harris and Ganim beat Capital's Buchanan and Duncan, 8-4, to improve to 20-9 this season.  The No. 2 tandem of Minrovic and Patterson beat Capital's DiMichelangelo and Judson, to improve to 18-5.  At No. 3, Horvath and Kearney defeated the Crusaders' Murray and Doug Gugel-Bryant, 8-0, and improved to 18-0.  The win at No.3 doubles was the 87th of Horvath's career for an 87-19 overall mark. When combined with his 96 singles wins, gives him 183 career combination triumphs to rank second all-time with a 183-30.

With its win, BW veteran Head Coach Brian Rector, the winningest men's tennis coach in the history of the state of Ohio (at any level) improved his career record to 436-85 with a .837 winning percentage.

A year ago, BW finished 29-1 overall, had a school-record 29 wins and 29-match winning streak, won both the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
