BW Men Win at Otterbein, Move to 17-0

WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team improved to 17-0 today (Friday, April 5, 2013) with a 5-4 victory against Otterbein University in an OAC match.

The win improves BW to 17-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC and is the 46th win in the last 47 dual matches dating back to last season when it finished 29-1 overall, won both the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  With their loss, the Cardinals are 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.

BW trailed, 2-1, after doubles play, but came back to win four of six singles matches to earn the win.

Highlighting the victory was senior No. 1 singles player Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated Otterbein's Will Willson by the scores of 6-3 and 6-4 to win his 90th career match and improve to 90-11 for his career with a .891 career winning percentage. He is second all-time in singles wins. The all-time leader is James Daly (2005-2008) with 105 career victories.

In addition to Horvath, freshman No. 2 singles player Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) won his match against Ryan Shutt, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2, to improve to 19-3 overall. At No. 5 singles, junior Academic All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 student-athlete Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) beat Otterbein's Jocob Devore, 6-4 and 6-0, to move to 18-4. At No. 6 singles, junior Dan Rowsey (Ashland) beat Kevin Adell, 6-1 and 6-4, to improve to 8-5 overall.   

In doubles action, the No. 3 duo of seniors Horvath and Kearney won 8-5 to improve to a perfect 13-0.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, April 10 when they travel to Bexley to play Capital University in an OAC match at 3:30 p.m. The next home match is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 against Wilmington College at 12:00 noon on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.
