BW Men’s Tennis Team Beats JCU, 8-1

BEREA, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 8-1, today (Wednesday, April 24, 2013) in an OAC match at the The "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts.  BW has two more regular season matches remaining.

The victory improves BW's record to 21-1 overall and 6-1 in the OAC.  The Yellow Jackets have won 50 of their last 51 regular season dual matches, including a 29-match streak a year ago and a 20-match streak this season.  JCU drops to 4-12 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets led, 2-1, after doubles play and won all six singles matches.

Highlighting the singles action for BW was All-OAC No. 1 senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated senior Ryan Mullaney, 6-3 and 6-2, and improved to 22-3 this season and 95-11 for his career.  Horvath is 10 wins shy of all-time leader James Daly (2005-08).

In addition in singles, All-OAC No. 2 sophomore Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) beat junior Sean Graham, 6-3 and 6-1, to up his season record to 22-5.  No. 3 freshman Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) defeated freshman Sawyer Dina, 6-0 and 6-1, and improved to 24-3.  Academic All-OAC No. 4 senior Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) beat freshman Peter Nemes, 6-0 and 6-3, to climb to 19-3.  Freshman No. 5 Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated junior Eric Grimaldi, 7-6 (with a 7-4 tiebreaker) and 6-2, to improve to 21-5.  Academic All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 No. 6 junior Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) beat junior Paul Olexa, 6-4, 4-6 and 10-4, and improved to 20-6.

In doubles action, the No. 2 tandem of Minrovic and Patterson beat Grimaldi and Nemes, 8-1, to improve to 17-5.  At No. 3, Horvath and Kearney defeated Olexa and Dina, 8-0, and improved to 14-0.

BW returns to the courts on Friday, April 26 when it travels to Columbus for an OAC make-up match versus Capital University at 3:30 p.m. and then ends its season at Marietta College on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
