BW Mens Tennis Team Beats Mt. Union to Improve to 18-0

ALLIANCE, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team improved to 18-0 today (Saturday, April 6, 2013) with a 7-2 victory against host the University of Mount Union at Whitehall Courts. The victory stretches BW's regular season winning streak to 47 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

The win also improves BW to 3-0 in the OAC and is the 47th win in the last 48 dual matches dating back to last season when it finished 29-1 overall, won both the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  With their loss, the Purple Raiders are 10-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.

BW led 3-0 after doubles play, and won four of six singles matches to earn the win.

Highlighting the victory was senior No. 1 singles player Joe Horvath (North Royalton), who defeated Mt. Union's Nate Fockler by the scores of 6-2 and 6-0 to win his 91st career match and improve to 91-11 for his career with an .892 career winning percentage. He is second all-time in singles wins. The all-time leader is James Daly (2005-2008) with 105 career victories.

In addition to Horvath, freshman No.2 singles player Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) defeated Mt. Union's Malcolm Leake, 6-1 and 6-4, to improve his record to 20-3.  Senior Academic All-OAC No.4 player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) improved to 16-2 overall with a 6-1 and 6-1 win against the Purple Raiders' Patrick Yackmack.  Freshman No.5 player Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated Mt. Union's Ben Swope, 6-2 and 6-4, to improve to 18-4 overall.     

In doubles action, Harris and Ganim defeated Nate and Nick Fockler, 8-2, to improve to 18-6.  Sophomore Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) and senior All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 student-athlete Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) defeated the Purple Raider duo of Leake and Yackmack, 8-2, to improve to 14-4 this season. Horvath and Kearney defeated the Mt. Union tandem of Swope and Josh Duerr, 8-5, to improve to 14-0.  

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, April 10 when they travel to Bexley to play Capital University in an OAC match at 3:30 p.m. The next home match is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 against Wilmington College at 12:00 noon on the "Pop" Collins Courts in Berea.
