BW Men’s Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller in Season Opener

ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA --  Junior forward Michael Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Fredonia State (N.Y.) University in the first game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn State Behrend.

BW (1-0) advances to the Championship Game tomorrow night and will play the winner of the Bethany (W. Va.) and host Penn State Behrend at 7 p.m.

Junior midfielder Eric Sokol (Burell, Pa.) gave the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when he beat the Blue Devil netminder in an one-on-one showdown and buried the shot into the lower left corner.

Fredonia State evened the score at 1-1 when Jakob Persons found the back of the net off the assist from Jay Dry in the 65th minute.

Brennan gave BW the victory one he one timed the cross from sophomore forward Aaron Harden (Mentor) into the open goal in the 100th minute.  The assist was the first of Harden's career.

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Blue Devils by a 15-11 count and also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Following its game tomorrow night, BW will travel to Norfolk, Virginia to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College in the first round of the Marlin Classic on Saturday, September 7 at 7 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets will conclude the Marlin Classic on Sunday, September 8 when they face the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College at 5 p.m.
