BW Men’s Soccer Opens Marlin Classic With Victory

NORFOLK, Virginia -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team defeated host Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-1, in the first round of the Marlin Classic.  The Yellow Jackets also play North Carolina Wesleyan tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets, now 2-1 oveall, will play for their second tournament title in two weeks.

In the first half, senior forward Andrew Preis (Mentor) opened the scoring in the 11th-minute, with the assist coming from Nick Gallo (Richfield/Revere), his first of the year and first of his career. Preis scored his first goal of the season and the second of his career.  

Virginia Weslyan equalized the score when freshman midfielder Kyle Fisher scored at the 35-minute mark, making the score 1-1.  

BW took a 2-1 lead at the 46:30 mark when junior defender Bill Gamble (Brunswick) scored his first goal of the season, fourth of his career and the game-winner. The assist came from Gallo making this his second for the game and second in his career.       

In goal for BW, senior Tyler Beaton (Beamus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) faced 27 shots, including 11 on-goal, allowed one goal and made 10 saves and is now 2-1 overall.

The Marlins outshot the Yellow Jackets by a 27-8 count and also had a 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 when they host cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.  Next Saturday, Sept. 14, the BW men and women play a doubleheader at Grove City (Pa.)n College.
