WAYNESBURG, Pennsylvania -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team tied host Waynesburg (Pa.) University, 2-2, tonight (Tuesday, September 24, 2013) at Hoag Field.
With the tie, BW improved to 2-4-3 overall while Waynesburg is 4-1-1.
Waynesburg opened the scoring in the 23rd-minute when midfielder Colin Nelson scored giving Waynsesburg the early 1-0 advantage.
BW tied the score early in the second half when sophomore midfielder Zach Smith (Parma/ Normandy) scored the equalizer in the 46th-minute making the game 1-1. Smith scored his first goal of the season, and the third in his career.
Waynesburg came right back and regained the lead when midfielder Nick Broomer scored in the 47th-minute making the score 2-1.
But Smith once again equalized the game for the BW Yellow Jackets when he scored a goal that was assisted by junior defender Bill Gamble (Brunswick) in the 65th minute. Smith netted his second of the game and the fourth of his career. Gamble had his first assist of the season.
The two 10-minute overtime sessions were scoreless.
In goal for BW, senior Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) faced 21 total shots, including seven on-goal, allowed two goals and made five saves and is now 2-4-3 overall. Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Haynes (Medina) faced three shots on-goal and saved all three in 63 minutes of playing time.
BW outshot Waynesburg by a 35-21 count and won the battle of corner kicks, 11-2.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Defiance, Ohio to play Defiance College in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. Next week, the BW men host Oberlin College at The George Finnie Stadium on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. and then open Ohio Athletic Conference play versus Otterbein University on the Tressel Field pitch on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
