Men’s Soccer Team Announces 2013 Team Award Winners

BEREA, Ohio -- Five Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer student-athletes received awards at the team's season-ending banquet in the Strosacker Hall.

Senior midfielder Judson Sprandel (Akron/Green) was named as the Most Valuable Player and a recipient of the Captains Award. He played his fourth season of soccer and earned his fourth varsity letter. Sprandel played and started all 21 matches, took a career-high 20 shots, including five on-goal, and had one assist. He played a key role on a defense that recorded four shutouts. Judson earned Academic All-OAC honors for the third straight year and Academic All-Ohio accolades for the second time. He also was named honorable mention All-East Region honors by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America).

Junior forward Cody Smith (Brunswick) named as the Offensive Player of the Year. He played his third season of soccer and earned his third varsity letter. Smith competed in 16 games, took 18 total shots, including 10 on-goal, and scored three goals for six points. 

Junior defender Trey Arney (Coshocton) was named as the Defensive Player of the Year. He played his third season of soccer and earned his third letter.  Arney appeared and started in 20 matches, took nine total shots, including six on-goal, and scored one goal for two points. For his efforts on and off the field, he was selected both All-OAC and Academic All-OAC and both All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio. 

Freshman midfielder Adam Grove (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was named as the Rookie of the Year. He played in his first season of soccer and earned his first varsity letter. Grove appeared in all 21 games and took two shots. He also was a key member of a defense that had four shutouts and allowed 1.33 goals-per-game.

Senior goalie Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) was named as the "Players Player" and a recipient of the Captains Award. He played in his fourth season of soccer and earned his fourth varsity letter. Beaton started in 19 games in goal, had four shutouts, an .808 save percentage and allowed 1.31 goals-per-game.
