No. 11 Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Marietta

BEREA, OHIO -- The No. 11-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team (NSCAA Division III Coaches national poll) shut out Marietta College, 4-0, today (Saturday, October 1, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.  This match marked the first OAC contest for both squads. The shutout was B-W's second straight and third this season. 

B-W opened the scoring at the 10:23 mark when senior 3-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season off an assist from senior All-OAC midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron). This was the lone goal of the first half. Vandendriessche's goal was his school-record 39th of his career and now gives him 87 career points (39 goals and 9 assists) to leave him five points shy of Jeff Schenk (1983-86) for first on the all-time scoring list.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended its lead when junior midfielder Kirk Graf (Ashland/ Senior) scored his sixth goal of the season via an assist from junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit). The assist was Brennan's team-leading sixth of the season.

To put the game away for B-W, freshman forward Cody Smith (Brunswick) scored two goals within a 3:13 span to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 4-0. His two goals were the first two of his career and came at times of 77:08 and 80:21, respectively. The second goal was assisted by freshman midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere), his first assist of the season.

In net, junior Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced five shots, and one on-goal, and had one save as he recorded his ninth win of the season (9-1 record).

B-W outshot Marietta, 27-5, and won the corner kick battle, 6-2.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets, who are also ranked third in the Great Lakes Region of Division III,  won their 10th straight match and improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, October 1 when they play host to the Crusaders of Capital University in an OAC match on the Tressel Field pitch at 7:00 p.m.   B-W will then play host to Otterbein University on Saturday, October 8 in the second game of a men's and women's OAC soccer doubleheader at 7:00 p.m.  The women's game will kickoff at 4:30 p.m.

 On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
