20th-Ranked Jackets Defeat Mount Union

BEREA, OHIO -- The 20th-ranked (D3soccer.com poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team battled torrential downpours enroute to defeating the University of Mount Union, 2-1, tonight (Wednesday, October 19, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on the Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium.

The victory for the Yellow Jackets, who are also ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region of Division III, tied the school record for wins a season with 14.  B-W now is 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.  The loss drops, the Purple Raiders to 7-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring when senior three-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) buried the shot into the back off the net off the through ball from senior forward Noah Eubanks (West Bloomfield, Mich.) at the 32:08 mark of the first half.

Mount Union knotted the game back up, 1-1, when Chris Motley fended off two B-W defenders and scored the unassisted goal into the lower right corner at 40:55.

The Yellow Jackets scored the game winner when freshman forward Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) was near the far corner and hit a shot that into the right upper 90 at the 74:31 mark. The goal was the fourth of the season and the second in the last two games for Deighton.

With his goal, Vandendriessche tied the school record for goals in a season with 13, a record he previously tied in 2009 with two other players.  In addition, his 13 goals and 30 points lead the OAC and rank 16th and 18th nationally in Division III.  Vandendriessche is the all-time leader in goals scored with 43 and career points with 95. He is two games away from becoming the all-time leader in games played (79) and is six points shy of holding the record for points in a season (36).

In net, Ryan Hulings (Centerville) had eight saves and recorded his 13 victory of the season.

B-W and Mount Union were even in the shot category with 14 apiece but the Purple Raiders won the corner battle 7-5.

This Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams host Wilmington College in an OAC doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and the Yellow Jackets have posted a perfect 6-0 record in those doubleheaders.
