Men’s Soccer Team Loses in Overtime to Elizabethtown

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team opened its 2011 season today (Saturday, September 3, 2001) with a 3-2 overtime loss to Elizabethtown (Pa.) College in the first round of the annual Herb Lauffer Tournament, hosted by Penn State Behrend University in Erie, Pennsylvania.  The loss puts the Yellow Jackets in tomorrow's consolation  match versus the host school at 10:00 a.m.

The Yellow Jackets, 0-1 overall, received goals from junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) and freshman MF Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere). Deighton's goal came on a direct kick.  In goal, junior Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced six BlueJay shots and made three saves.

The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 until the final three minutes of regulation, but Elizabethtown scored to tie the match at 2-2 and then won it in the first extra period at the 95:24 mark.

B-W scored first at the 10:51 mark of the first half when Brennan received an assist from three-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) and deposited the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.  B-W also led 1-0 at the intermission.

In the second half, Elizabethtown knotted the contest at 1-1 at the 66:06 mark when Kyle Fowler scored via a header on a throw in with a double assist from Geoff Cochrane and Jon Willingham.  The tied was shortlived, however, as B-W scored soon-after, at the 68:16 mark, when Deighton tallied for a 2-1 advantage.

But Elizabethtown's Zach Hollinger scored via an assist from Erik Weber at the 86:55 mark to tie it at 2-2. Weber then set up Cameron Wyllie with the match-winner at 95:24 on a long ball that Hulings came out to defend.

The Yellow Jackets outshot Elizabethtown, 9-6, but were on the short end of a 2-0 advantage in corners, including the one that led to the first BlueJay goal.

Following tomorrow's consolation match, B-W is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 when they host traditional rival Oberlin College in The George Finnie Stadium in Berea at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
