Jackets Knocked Out of OAC Tournament

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO -- The third-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team was knocked out of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals by second-seeded John Carroll University, 2-0, tonight (Tuesday, October 25, 2011) on Wasmer Field in the Don Shula Stadium.  Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets will await Sunday's NCAA Division III Tournament Selection Committee's decision regarding an At-Large berth in this year's national tournament.

With its loss, B-W ends the regular season portion of its schedule at 16-5 overall.  The 16 victories represents a school-record for victories in a season. The Yellow Jackets, who came into the match ranked third in the Great Lakes Region by the NCAA Selection Committee, has a 3-1 mark against teams ranked in the region.

With its win, JCU improved to 12-7 and advances to play top-seeded Ohio Northern University on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the OAC Tournament Championship game at 2:00 p.m.

JCU opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Kevin McKamish at the 50:45 mark of the second half.  The Blue Streaks closed out the scoring and led 2-0 when sophomore midfielder Nathan Sharbaugh found the back of the net off a rebound shot.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, junior Ryan Hulings (Centerville) had eight saves and now has a record of 15-4 this season.  For the Blue Streaks, senior Carl Contrascier collected seven saves and improved to 11-6 this season.

John Carroll outshot B-W, 18-15, but the Yellow Jackets won the corner kick battle, 9-2.

After 21 matches, the Yellow Jackets are led in scoring by senior 3-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) with an OAC-leading 16 goals and five assists for a single-season school-record 37 points. Junior midfielder Kirk Graf (Ashland) is second with eight goals and six assists for 22 points and All-OAC and Academic All-OAC midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) is third with 21 points on seven goals and seven assists.  Hulings has five shutouts this season and has allowed just 20 goals in 19 matches and 1731 minutes of action.
