No. 11 Men’s Soccer Team Shuts Out Capital

BEREA, OHIO -- The 11th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team (NSCAA Division III Coaches national poll) shut out Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 3-0, tonight (Monday, October 3, 2011) in a match on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.  

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets, who are also ranked third in the Great Lakes Region of Division III, won their school record 11th straight match and improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC. The loss drops the Crusaders to 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the OAC.

In addition to winning its school-record 11th straight match,the Brennan brothers each scored a goal in the same game for the first time, senior three-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) continued his assault on the all-time school scoring mark and junior goalie Ryan Hulings (Centerville) recorded his third shutout in the past four matches.

B-W opened scoring at the 40:24 mark when freshman forward Cody Smith (Brunswick) set up the goal for freshman forward Mike Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) off a cross pass to the center of the pitch. The goal was the first of Brennan's career, his first since returning from injury four matches ago and his first match-winner.

The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 2-0 at the 62:40 mark when Vandendriessche took a punt from junior goalkeeper Hulings and broke away from a Capital defender and beat the Crusader goalie for score his team-and-OAC-leading 10th goal of the season. With his goal, Vandendriessche now has 40 goals and nine assists for 89 career points. It leaves him three points shy of Jeff Schenk's (1983-86) school-record of 92 career points.

Junior 2-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit), older brother of freshman Mike, netted the final goal of the match at the 87:25 mark unassisted. The goal was Brennan's seventh this season and the 19th of his career. He now has 19 career goals and 16 assists for 54 career points.

In net, Hulings had two saves and recorded his 10th victory this season and third shutout of the season. The shutout also was his second straight and third in his last five starts. As a team, B-W has four shutouts in its last six matches.

B-W outshot Capital, 22-7, and won the corner battle, 10-4.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, October 8 when they play host to Otterbein University on in the second game of a men's and women's OAC soccer doubleheader at 7:00 p.m.  The women's game will kickoff at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO). This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
