The Men’s Soccer Team Wins its Third Straight Match

BEREA, OHIO –  Senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) scored three goals as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team won its third straight match and defeated Spalding (Ky.) University, 5-1, today (September 9, 2011) in the first round of the Centre College Tournament in Danville, Kentucky. 

 With his three goals, Vandendriessche is now tied with Tyler Leister (2007-10) for third on the all-time goal-scoring list with 33. He also is tied with Jamie Mertz (1992-96) for fourth on the all-time scoring list with 71 career points.

 With the victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 3-1 overall. With its loss, Spalding falls to 1-1 overall. 

 The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 15:14 mark of the first half when junior forward Kirk Graf (Ashland/ Senior) scored an unassisted goal. The goal was the second in his career. B-W also led at halftime, 1-0.

 In the second half, B-W extended its lead to 2-0 when Vandendriessche scored his first goal at the 58:19 mark off of an assist from junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit).  Undaunted, Spalding came right back to make it a 2-1 contest when freshman forward Colin Peters scored at the 61:04 mark.

 That is when Vandendriessche put the Yellow Jacket offense on his back booting in another goal off an assist from Brennan at the 69:20 mark scored and an unassisted goal at the 70:24 marks to put B-W ahead 4-1. The final Yellow Jacket goal was scored by junior defender Ben Kolich (East Aurora, N.Y./ East Aurora) for his first career tally off an assist from freshman midfielder Mike Womack (Mentor).

 B-W outshot the Golden Eagles, 33-11, and the Yellow Jackets outcornered Spalding,  8-1.

 In net, B-W junior Ryan Hulings (Centerville) played the first 78:00 of the match, faced 10 Golden Eagle shots, allowed the lone goal  and made three saves to earn his third win this season and 13th of his career. He was followed by junior Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) who played the final 12:00, faced one shot and made one save.

 The Yellow Jackets will remain in Danville and play host Centre on Saturday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m.

 On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
