No. 16 Men’s Soccer Team Beats Allegheny (Pa.)

BEREA, OHIO -- The 16th-ranked (NSCAA Division III Coaches poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated Allegheny (Pa.) College, 4-2, tonight (Wednesday, September 21, 2011) in a non-conference match on the Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.  The contest pitted two teams ranked in the Great Lakes Region of Division III as the Yellow Jackets are ranked second and the Gators are seventh.

With its victory, B-W improved to 7-1 overall and ran its winning streak to seven straight matches.  The loss drops Allegheny to 6-2 overall and was its second loss in its last three matches, including both to Ohio Athletic Conference teams.

Highlighting the match for B-W was senior 3-time All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche who broke the school-record for goals scored in a career and a pair of goals by junior forward Kirk Graf (Ashland/ Senior).

Graf opened scoring for the Yellow Jackets with his fourth goal of the season at the 9:38 mark via a cross from junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit).  The assist was Brennan's team-leading fifth this season and the 14th of his career.

Allegheny's junior forward Tyler Danzey responded with a goal of his own off an assist from Connor Azevedo at 28:37 to knot the game at 1-1.

B-W regained a 2-1 advantage at the 38:57 mark when freshman midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere) scored his second goal of the season.  He broke down the right side of the field on a fast break and beat both the Gator defender and goalie for the unassisted tally.

The Gators again tied the score at 2-2 at the 43:53 mark when senior midfielder Arthur Smith knocked home a loose ball in front of the Yellow Jacket goal following a corner kick and a scramble. The match remained tied at 2-2 at the intermission.

In the second half, B-W gained a 3-2 lead at the 53:28 mark when Graf scored his second goal of the match and fifth of the season when Vandendriessche gave him a beautiful cross to end a 3-on-3 fast break. The assist was Vandendriessche's second this season and the seventh of his career.

The Yellow Jackets came right back at the 56:08 mark when Vandendriessche tallied his record-setting goal. It was his seventh this season and the 37th of his illustrious career. His 37 goals breaks the previous record of 36 by Jeff Schenk (1983-86). Vandendriessche's three points tonight give him 16 this season and 80 for his career and leaves him 12 shy of another Schenk school-record.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to play the Titans of Westminster College in the first game of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.  B-W will return to the friendly confines of the Tressel Field pitch at the George Finnie Stadium on Tuesday, September 27 when it plays host to the College of Mount St. Joseph in the second game of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
