Yellow Jackets Beat CWRU, 3-2

BEREA, OHIO – Senior  forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) scored twice and junior Kirk Graf (Ashland) had the match-winner at the 86:53 mark as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team erased a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 3-2,  tonight (September 14, 2011) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.

With its win, B-W, ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Region poll, improves to 5-1 overall and has won five straight overall. With its loss, CWRU, ranked fourth in the region,  falls to 4-1 overall . The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the first match of a men's and women's doubleheader at Grove City College of Pennsylvania. The B-W and GCC women kickoff at 3:30 p.m.

The two goals by Vandendriessche, a 3-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference player, give him 36 career goals and ties him with B-W legend Jeff Schenk (1983-86) for the school-record. His four points give him 77 in his career and leaves him three shy of Tyler Leister (2007-10) for third on the all-time scoring list. Schenk was in attendance at tonight's game. Graf's goal was his third.

CWRU opened the scoring at the 7:57 mark when O'Day took a cross and beat the Yellow Jacket keeper for his sixth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Eric Erb was credited with the assist. The Spartans increased their advantage to 2-0 when O'Day tallied his seventh goal this season at the 18:40 mark following a cross from senior forward Vinny Bell. CWRU led 2-0 at the intermission.

Early in the second stanza, Vandendriessche scored his first goal at the 47:59 mark via a pass from junior Graf to make the score 2-1. The goal was Vandendriessche's 35th of his career.

With B-W being the aggressor, Vandendriessche tallied the equalizer and the career-record at the 63:18 mark during a scramble in front of the CWRU goal.

Following Saturday's twinbill at Grove City, the Yellow Jackets return home to play Allegheny (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Sept. 21 on the Tressel Field pitch at Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
