Men’s Basketball Takes Down East Texas Baptist in Don Lane Classic Opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated East Texas Baptist University by a score of 85-77 in the first day of the Don Lane Classic hosted by Transylvania (Ky.) University in the Clive M. Beck Center.

BW (4-6) moves on to play the host Transylvania tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Don Lane Classic championship game. ETBU (3-7) will take on DePauw (Ind.) University tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Don Lane Classic consolation game.

BW Leaders

  • Sophomore guard Ray Ellington (Westlake) scored a career-high 28 points and added seven rebounds
  • Freshman forward AJ Pestello (Cuyahoga Falls/Stow-Munroe Falls) scored 17 points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Brayden Hamilton (Brunswick) tallied 12 points by shooting 4-6 from three
  • Freshman guard Titus Baskerville IV (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) added 11 points and eight assists

ETBU Leaders

  • Senior guard Jayden Williams led the team with 22 points
  • Senior forward Darry Moore recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds
  • Junior guard Ryan Elzy finished with 18 points 

First Half (BW 31-28)

  • Pestello led BW with eight points while Moore scored eight for the Tigers
  • Senior forward Rob Watson III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) recorded all three of his blocks 
  • ETBU tied things up at 21 after trailing for most of the half but not before BW took a three point into the intermission
  • 26 of the Yellow Jackets' 31 points were scored in the paint
  • The Brown and Gold defense held ETBU to a 31% shooting percentage from the field

Second Half (BW 85-77)

  • Ellington lifted BW as he scored 22 of his 28
  • The Yellow Jackets trailed by eight before going on a 44-29 run to close the game
  • BW regained the lead off a dunk by junior forward Jarred Logan (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) and never looked back
  • The Brown and Gold shot 60% from deep
